Is this a new thing we're doing? I thought pokemon only got their tag (pikachu for example) and not a species tag like rodent.

They do get tagged with overarching tags like "feline" and "rodent" but not more specific tags like "rat" and "cat".

Broad species categories can be tagged if the pokemon actually resemble those. Pikachu, for instance, shouldn't be tagged as a mouse. But rodent is applicable. Though that's arguable, since they don't actually look much like rodents.
Other examples: Lopunny can be tagged as lagomorph, arbok as a snake, lucario as a canine, etc. But they should not be tagged as rabbit, cobra, or jackal.

That's what I thought once if a bit contradictory to my original example of rodent, but I've been seeing the gen 7 starters get tagged with cat, seal, owl and was confused.

In short, it should be generalized because one can't be 100% certain with fictitious species.

Sometimes users overtag them.
Feline should suffice for Litten, and pinniped for Popplio.
But 'owl' is the common name for the strigiformes order, which contains over 200 species of owls in two families (true owls and barn-owls). It could be considered a generic category..
