Topic: of shinies and palette swapping

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

see here (RPG section the ctrl+f pokemon) and yep, nothing but simple palette swaps.

this "shiny" fan term annoys me every time i see it. it's likely most commonly seen in pokemon but i doubt it's exclusive to pokemon pics.

perhaps for things like OC's that are merely recolors yet otherwise look the exact same as the original character(s) in question (clothing aside if there happens to be any present), a palette swap tag could be of use?

shiny pokemon is an actual feature in pokemon games and not just fan term. while most of pokemons have same palette, there is a small chance for pokemon to have an alternate palette. these pokemons are referred as shiny pokemon because of the glimmering effect they have while appearing.

-1. Mixing canon and non-canon colors under the same tag would make alternate_color useless for filtering out non-canon variants, etc. And as far as I can see, that's the main purpose of it.

-_- fan terminology which eventually became canon. sparkles of gleam or whatever aside, it's still basically an alternate color palette. canon or not.

calling them shiny doesn't make it any less a palette swap.

Especially to the uninitiated.

You see a Pokémon that is a different color than the norm, Shiny Pokémon or not, it should be tagged alternate_color. And if it isn't a Shiny and has an alternate color, such as a monochrome Lucario, you also tag it fan_character.

Shiny is a term that has become common sense, unlike heart-shaped pikachu tails. If you look up alternate colors of pokemon on google, Bulbapedia comes up to point you at such a page, at the top of which it lists Shiny pokemon. Look further down, and it's recognized as canon that there are Shiny alternate colors and Nonshiny alternate colors.
Heck, one of the biggest Nonshiny Alternate Colors is Purple Kecleon, who makes an appearance in most of the PMD games. Shiny Kecleons are still primarily green, not purple.
