Currently sabertooth is a species tag with ~1000 posts. The wiki (written in 2012) states that it is only for the teeth themselves and they indeed imply fangs.
Smilodon on the other hand is the tag that is supposed to be used for what is sometimes referred to as "sabertooth cat" or "sabertooth tiger", and interestingly it actually implies sabertooth (and thus fangs) as well; presumably they tried to put a band-aid on the tag to reinforce how they wanted things to be done.
Our options seem to be to either come up with a different name for "sabertooth-style teeth", a different name for the species, or both. I'd be fine with smilodon as the final tag (assuming there aren't subspecies, I'm not very familiar with them) but it doesn't seem like leaving sabertooth for the teeth themselves works very well.
Tags:
- fangs
- sabertooth - Species tag, supposed to be for "sabertooth-style" teeth (for lack of better wording)
- Other tags:
- saber_tooth_tiger (81), saber-toothed_tiger (9)
- saber_teeth (21) (somehow ended up as a species tag), saber_tooth (9), saberteeth (6)
Summary of issues:
- sabertooth is a species tag, but implications/wiki support usage for the teeth themselves. We probably need to come up with a new tag for the characteristic.
- smilodons automatically get fangs. I don't know if this is causing issues but I would be very surprised if it didn't.
- There are some misc. tags that probably should aliased somewhere.
