Topic: Before aliasing, implicating, or cleaning an unnecessary tag

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Please take the time to go through posts with the tag that's about to be fixed. These posts tend to suffer from what I call Bad Tagger Syndrome, which means they probably have other unnecessary or incorrect tags as well.

If you can't go through posts at any given time, yet would still like someone to look at them before suggesting an action, write your idea down somewhere. At the moment, the best thing to do would be to leave a post on the tagging project thread, then leave a blip linking to your post. Someone's bound to notice it.

Other ideas:

If we could make a new tagging project thread, one where the original post is regularly updated and organized, that would be awesome.

I don't know where else we can have discussions about tagging problems without cluttering the current project thread. I'm starting to think there should be individual threads for every discussion and cleanup. But that's just me.

PSA: Before making a PSA please make sure that the speaker actually has any kind of authority to create a PSA about the subject in question.

Only admins can approve aliases and implications, and Paras, Pickle, and Husky all go through the threads first.
Discussions about tags happen in new threads anyway, so what is this thread supposed to accomplish?

Understood.

I seem to always find new tags while going through other tags. Finding one issue branches out into finding many other ones. We should encourage keeping track of what has and hasn't been fixed yet before an alias wipes out one way of finding these problems.

Most of the projects in the sticky never get finished. Tagging is slow work and most are busy with their own projects; not to mention that many projects keep constantly growing because of new mistags.

While you're correct in saying that those posts usually have other things that need fixing, the best we can do is handle one tag at a time. There's currently about 55000 general tags, and at least half of those need some clean up..

If you're suggesting an alias, please don't do this. Being able to see what posts are currently in the tag provides helpful clues for what the tag is likely to be tagged for in the future.

For example, imagine if someone took all the billiards out of pool before suggesting it should be aliased to swimming_pool. If that alias were to go through on the assumption that "it's not being tagged for anything else", it's likely that future taggers would accidentally mistag things as swimming_pool without realizing it.

That being said, in the alias thread following through with a cleanup during that time can be extremely helpful when paired with good communication. :)

This. That thread is better equipped for large projects that encompass many tags. If there's any pre-alias/implication cleanup that needs to be done, discussion on that are better suited to a new thread.

Speaking of tag usage, I made these little graphs just recently showing post count vs tag; first black line marks less than 10 posts, second marks less than 5 and third marks 1. Bottom graphs are capped at 250 posts since the top ones aren't very useful due to a few gigantic tags (e.g. mammal). Maybe it doesn't help any but personally found it quite interesting.

One question:

Is it wrong to correct a charactertag on 5 pics when another tag is used for 95 other pics?

example:

Boha, 5 pics

Selene_(Boha), 95 pics

I just changed them, hope I did nothing wrong here. (It's the same fox in every picture)

Nope, that was a good change.
