Shouldn't it be ambiguous_gender then (albeit a bit wordy), using "ambiguous" is maybe a little... Ambiguous... And then you got:
None of which are currently used. I'm not sure how useful any of these tags would be for searching purposes.

Some people like that sort of thing.
As for the tags themselves, the _gender part of it just makes the ambiguous tag less confusing in the sidebar (at least that's what I've always thought). Now that both ambiguous_gender and the gender/gender tags are well established, I don't think that shortening it would be much of a problem. Either way we should definitely alias one to the other to prevent confusion.
