Topic: Tag Discussion: "Crown" and "Tiara"

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Crown and tiara are currently tagged quite inconsistently. For example, some posts with a tiara are also tagged with crown, while others aren't; meanwhile, Princess Celestia's headwear is alternately tagged with only crown or tiara.

What are your thoughts on classifying crowns and tiaras? Wikipedia focuses on the context (e.g., crowns=royal symbol and tiaras=female decorative headpieces), while other sources assert that proper tiaras are semicircular unlike circular crowns.

There's also the possibility of aliasing/implicating these, if need be.

To me, a Tiara is a piece of headwear similar to the crown, but with the focus of its appearance being centered at the front. If there is a back, it is small and often hidden in the hair.

A crown, meanwhile, is a piece of headwear that has a focus on the whole circle. While the front might be more noticeable, the back is still definitely present and part of its appearance.

Until this thread, I honestly wouldn't have thought that there was such a thing as a "Full tiara," which is basically a bejeweled crown. Huh. According to my google searches, a tiara has thinner pieces, sometimes like wires or thin bars, while the crown is more solid, like they poured the molten metal into a can-like mold and then carved the crown from that.

Edit:
To clarify: post #776351 crown versus tiara post #677067
The problem: Do we go by the latter defintion I posted (Tiaras are more of welded-together bars, Crowns are a solid shape) or the former (Tiaras are large in the front, and small-to-absent in the back)? Princess Celestia's headdress would get a different term based on that.

Don't even get me started on diadems...

But yeah, we could probably condense them in some way. I mean we really only need a general tag for "ornamental head_thingy"; I doubt most people will really care about the difference (unless it's specifically mentioned in a franchise by a different name).

This is of course assuming we don't figure out a simple way to define them. :P

It'd be significantly harder to tag by the context, so... crown = circular, tiara = semicircular seems like the simplest way to tag it.

After a bit more "research" it does seem like tiara is tagged more often from shape/style than from context: Princess Peach is almost exclusively tagged as wearing a crown, while the similarly royal Princess Celestia gets tagged with tiara a greater proportion of the time. Peach's crown is solid and circular while Celestia's is a front-facing semicircle.

In any case, tiaras are widely considered a type of crown. (see Wikipedia, current e621 wiki, ...)

Yeah, a tiara -> crown implication/alias would be a good fallback if there ends up being too many possible definitions. There are about 9000 posts with at least one of those tags right now but the difference is probably not that essential.

D-Diadems?! Holy crap this is what I've been calling Tiaras my whole life isn't it? Well, since Tiara seems the more popular use, let's alias Diadem to Tiara and maybe imply Tiara to Crown.

...isn't diadem more like a headband, whereas tiaras are worn on the top of the head?

Anyway, since most sites (Wikipedia included) consider tiaras to be a type of crown, the tiara -> crown implication seems like a good idea. It'd mean less work in the long term, at least.
