sound effect variant
Use this tag for sound effects that have extra repeated letters, or are missing letters. This is common applicable when the sound effect more closely resembles a sound than the verb it is based on.
Categories
- extended_sound_effect - Sound effects that contain extra letters, or have a extension dash in the middle to extend the sound.
- shortened_sound_effect - Sound effects that are missing letters, usually vowels.
If the sound effect seems to have both removed letters, and added letters, neither subtag may be applicable if the length of the sound effect doesn't change.
Gulp -> Glp goes from four to three letters. It is a reduction.
Gulp -> Gullp, or Gulpp goes from four to five letters. It is an extension.
Gulp -> Gllp both have four characters. It is neither an extension, or a reduction.
Multiple variants of the same sound effect do not qualify as different sound effects. Gulp, and Shlk are different. Gulp, and Glp are not.
Handling special cases
Most naturally vowelless sound effects are excluded from the sound_effect_variant tag. There may be a way to incorporate them into the tag in the future.
This tag guideline also applies to sound effects with alternate forms that are vowelless, and end in a repeated consonant. This means that some sound effects will only qualify as a variant if they have the spelling still intact.
Examples
- "Prrrr" is not a valid variant of "Purr", but "Purrr" would be valid.
- "Bzzz" is not a valid variant of "Buzz", but "Buzzz" would be valid.
This guideline does not apply to sound effects that end in repeated vowels.
Examples
- "Moooo" is a valid variant of "Moo".
Shortened form lookup
This table isn't by any means complete, but contains some sound effects that are sometimes tricky to identify their base form from the variant form.
