Samurai Pizza Cats is an anime series produced by Saban Entertainment as an English dub of the comedy-action series Kyattō Ninden Teyandē (キャッ党忍伝てやんでえ, lit. "Cat Legend Teyandee), produced by Tatsunoko Productions and Sotsu Agency. Saban picked up the North American distribution rights to the series — which originally aired in Japan on TV Tokyo from February 1, 1990 to February 12, 1991, for a total of 54 episodes — and produced a 52-episode English adaptation. The series first aired in the United Kingdom on ITV on August 31, 1991, and then appeared in 1992 on Canada's YTV network; and on American syndication in 1996. It became a cult hit among anime fans due to its hilarious pop culture references and farcical nature, as opposed to the more subdued and pun-based tone of its Japanese counterpart.
The series centers around a trio of cybernetic cats, Speedy Cerviche, Polly Esther, and Guido Anchovy; who all run a pizza parlour in Little Tokyo. They serve as heroes to protect the city from the power-hungry rat Big Cheese and his minions.
Saban's rights to the series expired in 2000, while Discotek Media currently holds the North American home video license to the series.
