Character: scp-1048

SCP-1048 is a living plush character from the mythos of the SCP Foundation website. Its debut story, SCP-1048 — Builder Bear, was posted in February 2012 by a writer known as trennerdios. The story itself being its author's debut work, it was written as a subversion of "nice SCP allowed to wander around the site" stories (such as SCP-529 — Josie the Half-Cat and SCP-999 — The Tickle Monster) and the title made in reference to the Build-A-Bear Workshop. It has also an inaugurate of the site's "Bearitage Collection", an ursine hall of fame from April Fool's Day 2019.

SCP-1048 is an animated teddy bear, classified by the SCP Foundation as a Keter-class object. Standing 33 centimeters (13 inches) tall, it has the appearance of a traditional antique teddy bear, with fluffy brown "fur", beady black eyes and nose, and wearing nothing but a black bow tie.

For the seven months following its discovery, SCP-1048 was considered anomalous solely for its autonomy. During its containment as a Safe-class object, SCP-1048 was observed to have the disposition of a young child. It would show affection usually in the form of a hug to the lower leg, and had also been observed dancing or jumping in place. This behavior led SCP-1048 to have a positive reception by SCP Foundation personnel, even D-class personnel with sociopathic tendencies. Due to its passiveness, SCP-1048 was allowed to roam Site-24 without supervision to improve morale.

SCP-1048 is incapable of speech, but would communicate through a small range of simple gestures, albeit to limited effectivity. Direct communication with SCP-1048 had been largely unsuccessful, as it had been unable to answer questioning concerning its nature or where it originated from; it is unclear whether this is by choice or simple lack of knowledge. Despite two separate events where it had gifted drawings to janitorial staff, SCP-1048 never made any attempts to communicate pictographically, even after encouragement by researchers to do so.

While not directly observed, SCP-1048 was found to have a secondary anomalous trait: the ability to duplicate materials for the means of constructing and animating crude replicas of itself. SCP-1048 was last sighted giving a tour of Site-24 to its first known creation, SCP-1048-A, which was constructed from human ears. After SCP-1048-A killed the security team that attempted to secure them, SCP-1048 and its creation escaped, prompting their upgrade to Keter due to the containment breach.

SCP-1048 remains uncontained and its whereabouts unknown, but is potentially somewhere in the recesses of Site-24, as after its disappearance, incidents with two more creations occurred. While SCP-1048 has not shown any hostility itself (aside from possibly performing an abortion on an unconscious doctor), the violent behavior exhibited by its known creations (with potentially more in existence) make it a danger. All teddy bears, whether anomalous or not, have been prohibited from Site-24 so as to not cause confusion or false alarm.

According to SCP-001 — Keter Duty, if SCP-1048 were to be recontained, it could be a viable method of containment for either SCP-1055 or SCP-1054-RU (before and after rewrite respectively).

The tale Reap What You Sew by S D Locke gives a potential backstory to SCP-2295 that relates them to SCP-1048. "Mr. Bear" was a fluffy brown teddy bear that spontaneously came to life July 19th, 1937 in the natal ward of a hospital, with an innate knowledge of his purpose and paranormal nature. That same evening, Mr. Bear came into the possession of Michael Farris, a prematurely born baby he saved the life of by salvaging the other non-living plushies for resources. Mr. Bear was Michael's favorite secretly-alive toy for the next two years until a fire claimed the Farris house; Mr. Bear was unable to rescue Michael from the fire, but Michael ending up possessing Mr. Bear's body while Mr. Bear's soul lived on in a lost tuft of cotton. Kyle Mitchell, a firefighter-trainee, recovered Mr. Bear's soggy fabric and returned it to the Farrises. After years in his old teddy bear's body and being designation as SCP-1048, Michael would reminisce on his time with Mr. Bear, and have the idea to make a new Mr. Bear.
