Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a federation of six states, two territories, and a federal district; the country covers the entire continent of the same name, as well as several islands, the largest of which is Tasmania (which is also one of Australia's states).
Australia is the world's sixth largest country, the largest country in Oceania, and one of the world's most urbanised countries, with 86% of Australia's 26 million people living in large metropolitan areas near, and on, the coasts of the continental nation, the interior — called "The Outback" — is sparsely populated desert and grasslands. Australia's capital is Canberra while its largest city is Sydney, other major cities include Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. Australia is known for its unique native wildlife — particularly the kangaroo, which is also the national animal — its vast Outback territory, surf culture, popularity of cricket, and wine.
