hud
Acronym for Head(s)-Up Display.
A way to show important data in the operator's normal field of vision, as opposed to forcing them to look down, hence the name. For instance, instead of car gauges being displayed behind the wheel, they would appear on the windshield. The technology was originally developed for combat aircraft and is often used in video games of all kinds.
This tag covers first-person and third-person (such as with a visor or head-mounted display) perspectives of said HUD in action. A number of visual aids in video games are sometimes referred as "HUD", though they should instead be tagged GUI if the viewer is not supposed to be part of the scene or the interface is not projected in front of him (the defining feature of the HUD).
