I think I read somewhere that they have two because of those giant pit things they sometimes form, that way they have a better chance of 'getting it in' a female if everyone starts fighting for them or something. Idk, I may be a gullible as well

No, that's true. They have the genes for limbs, they're just suppressed.

That said, evolution doesn't really "fuck up" so to speak. It's just a force that drives and is the result of change.
If a lineage is able to keep going, they're obviously succeeding well enough in their environment. If not, the better suited species will continue in their place.
