I'll bet to the untrained eye, this "spirit possession" would appear to be a form of progressive cancer.

You got me wondering if Daniel might actually be legit insane. Like, what if Carol is merely a fragment of his imagination, brought on by some horrors he was an unfortunate victim to but perhaps never received help for (thus forming his nightmares and, as his mental state worsened, hallucinations). And, as you stated, his dying appearance is possibly some sort of undiagnosed illness.

Could be that. Wouldn't explain the signs of her former life. The crime scene photos, her backstory, and such.

  • He's looking pretty thin. I'd be happy to cook him something nice and hearty. But gentle on his tummy so he won't feel sick afterwards.

I thought about that, but truthfully I don't know how to fit any of that into my theory.

Can't wait for more backstory on that.

Maybe he was a victim in that crime scene and Carol is the memories of the woman who couldn't escape with him. He imagines it as 30 years ago because it's easier to cope with trauma when you treat it like it's ancient.

I like that idea. To build off on that theory, it's possible the trauma was severe enough that it caused some sort of amnesia. Which would help explain why Daniel doesn't remember Carol (at least in regards to her physical appearance). Do recall that a series of lore-related images feature Daniel and Carol hooking up at what appeared to be a restaurant, yet Daniel has no idea who Carol actually was.

And perhaps Carol doesn't outright tell Daniel what happened then because, as a detective, she wants him to figure it out himself in order to properly jog his memory (for better or worse in this case).

Doesn't seem that convenient. Plus, he was clearly alive when met her.

  • Possibly a sufferer of fatal insomnia ever since he hooked up with a ghost.

Although, admittedly his death wouldn't be the worst thing, since he could now be together with his already dead GF.

I mean it doesn't explain that in the comic '24/7' the cashier with the glasses acknowledges her presence too, along with ours.
