Topic: Do you workout?

Posted under Off Topic

Why is working out so hard to get into? I've started working out again for about two weeks now and I think I've lost some weight but doesn't really feel like it. I didn't measure my self when I started. It was sort of spontaneous thanks to some Shia LaBeoufing

Here's what I normally do

60 three count jumping jacks
60 three count squats
60 three count arm air presses
(I like the number 60 ok)
30 three count push-ups, My arms aren't that strong
60 leg lunges
run for a few minutes in the backyard.

and I do all this with a 20 pound vest on. Also I have weighted wrist bands.

My weight is 229

what am I doing wrong? I just want to lose weight and be lean like I used to be. Help pls?

I just sit and surf the Internet
And it's years and years I'm stuck in 60 kg(=132 lb)

It depends on your height. Tell me your hight and I'll tell you what weight is good and how to reach it.
I'm an expert in fitness. I'm not joking

two weeks is not enough to significantly lose weight few kilos at best. give it few months. also you should figure out the daily calorie amount you need and keep your calorie intake a bit below that.

Well I normally eat a few pieces of toast with cheese and jelly on them plus a bowl of cereal or oatmeal in the morning. For lunch I just eat like a sandwich and chips or something. And for dinner it varies. I don't really have a set diet at all.

But the calorie thing sounds like a good idea.

Weight is not the best tool for measuring improvements. Since it doesn't tell anything about how much of that weight is muscle versus fat...

Just keep working out, and don't worry too much about the weight. Being lighter doesn't automatically mean that you're fitter.

Definitely don't just have three straight meals a day -- maybe try substituting some stuff? I mean, one can get through a day by eating little more than pasta

Ehh.. so do i.

Perhaps try running for longer? Running is fun.

Also if you can and if it's convenient, swimming is also very good for exercise

Ok. Here is my calculations result:
For 173cm white male:

59 - 75 kg Normal Weight
75 - 90 kg Overweight
>90 Fat

Ok so your next aim should be 90 kg = 199 lb

Which means you have to lose 30 lb in your first aim.

After reading your diet, I could tell it's OK. You need more running on your workouts list. Running is fun, you'll get addicted.

Also consider lowering your breakfast from next month, OK?

ok, even though I fucking hate running, I was thinking I should get into it as well. I'll give this a try for a month and see what my results are. Thanks for the suggestions everyone :D

OH WAIT! What sort of stuff should I do before running? should I warm up with jumping jacks or something? That's what I normally do but I only end up running for like 10 minutes though..

thats pretty impressive. i don't work out all the time but last time i did i could do the following pretty fast around or under 30 minutes depending on how hard i push myself:

1-200 short pushups, 60+ curls each arm 2-6 times each arm, 20+ times lifting the dumbell straight up with each arm, i forgot the name of it but that thing where you keep your arm outstrecthed in front of you while lifting a dumbell (pretty hard to do at first actually) 20+ times each arm, slow squats (squat down fast but stand slowly using only the legs), balancing on only one foot (mind you, i like walking/running in a partial digitigrade stance full time so this is harder for me than all you plantigrade walkers :P i have better balance), and lastly, practicing simple fighting moves (primarily punches).

this is all while using a 40lb. dumbbell :P

actually, i mostly like to just keep pushing myself and getting faster and faster (already effortless to move around normally) though the added strength is always nice too. been thinking i should get a heavier dumbbell sometime actually, maybe 80 lb.'s?

edit: come to think of it, i think my old record on pushups was 250+ without stopping for a short break? haven't done that in quite a while though.

I use to run a lot. I surprise myself with how much stamina I still got even after I became a full time gamer. Gained a little fat, though. Probably because of all that delicious ice cream.

Warm up by running with a low speed and then some stretching. Then start running as your feet please, you didn't come to a competition. Every time you felt tired, DON'T SIT UNLESS YOU GOT HEART PAIN. Walk instead until you have gathered enough strength to run a few minutes again.
For a beginner, running 20 mins (counting the restings) is enough for one day.

It's a convenient and useful tool as long as you understand its major limitations:

  • Muscle vs. fat (muscle is denser as you've mentioned).
  • In a normal person it will usually vary a lot (up to +/- 5 lbs [~2-3 kg], sometimes more) from day to day. Things like how much you've eaten, if you've just used the bathroom, dehydration, the reliability of your scale, rounding, etc. may factor into this.

For the first, there are other tests you can do to measure body fat vs. muscle, but you probably don't have the necessary tools to make measuring this practical at home. You can estimate it by flexing in front of the mirror while saying "Looking good, looking real good", but note that this is highly subject to personal bias (also lighting).

For the second, you can count for some variation by measuring weight at the same time every day under approximately the same conditions (e.g., morning before breakfast, after using the bathroom, in your pajamas or just nude, etc.). It will still vary a little, but it will be more reliable this way. Even then most people should look at the long-term trends rather than what you can measure in a week's worth of daily weights.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor; These are just very general suggestions and you may have have other circumstances that need to be taken into consideration. If you have questions about your specific situation, ask a doctor.

Normally I run about two miles each day.

Unfortunately, I eat enough to feed an entire village.

And I don't do much exercise aside from running.

I started working out about a month ago, it's been really nice actually. I haven't seen much of a change in weight or body shape yet, but I have felt a big difference in my stamina and overall energy levels, so I think that makes it worth it. I started going to the gym with a friend of mine, and it's been nice to be able to chat and hang out while we run (or whatever).

I agree with what Genjar said, don't worry about the weight. Also don't expect to see fast, immediate results, it takes a lot of time. Just keep going to the gym and start trying to have fun with it!

We diet to look good in our clothes.

We exercise to look good naked.

(I need to work a little harder at #2. My mountain bike is out of storage for the first time in 3 years!)

Before I hit the gym, I weighed 200 pounds. I'm 6'0", so my BMI hovered around the middle of overweight.

I bought one of those Costco 24 Hour Fitness gym memberships for $370, and have been hitting the gym since this March. For the most part, I'm on one of those ascending treadmills for 50 minutes, jogging almost 4.5 miles, and averaging 620 calories burned through over 7,000 steps.

As of now, I weigh around 184, feeling some of my fat being replaced by muscle, especially around my legs, shoulders, and waistline.

Heck yeah, it's a must for me.

100 consecutive crunches
Push-ups until I can't
Weight lifts until I can't
Weight curls until I can't
Go outside and do something until exhausted (jogging, dribbling a basketball, skating, etc.)

Eating-wise, I eat organic.

"until I can't" that may impress some other people mister 24/7 computer admin guy but all I imagine is you doing like 5 crunches then deleting more my precious post on here!

or maybe it's just because I can only do like 30. Crunches are fucking hard man. It's like I don't have any muscles at all in my stomach.

Heh you got me. All my muscles are in my legs and abs. My arms and chest are lacking thanks to track & field.

But I actually do 100 consecutive crunches. I just think of song and then just crunch to the beat :V

The most complicated thing I have ever seen. why don't they just beat the shit out of eachother with sticks. and ps it looks like women were playing! and I know this might be incredibly sexist but I think it's awesome you get to beat women with sticks in that game!

I mean I would love any game that lets you beat people but you never see games where you can hit the opposite sex and no one's like "YOU FUCKING MONSTER!!" . That's awesome! I Strongly believe that everyone deserves the equality of getting their ass beat for fun.

Not that complicated actually. Just difficult to keep track of everything at once. That separates the good players from the very good ones.

why don't they just beat the shit out of eachother with sticks.

Because it hurts? Pain is somewhat not fun. The "devices' operational ends" are surrounded by lots of rubber foam and they are checked at turnaments before they are allowed. Safety first!
You simply aren't supposed to "beat the shit out of each other". A gentle touch is enough to require a player to suffer the timeout penalty. Also: Hitting hard means hitting slow but the first hit counts.

it looks like women were playing!

Everyone can play. Yes. There are much more men though.

you never see games where you can hit the opposite sex and no one's like "YOU FUCKING MONSTER!!"

Everyone knows what they get themselves into. Though, as mentioned before, brutality won't get you very far and is generally deprecated. Having fun is an important aspect.

An interesting part about Jugger is that every type of player has some advantages. Unlike basketball for example: be shorter than the average doorframe and you can't do shit. In Jugger it doesn't matter if you are short (vanish behind a shield), tall (use your long legs to outrun everyone/your long arms for a maximum of reach), fast (first hit counts), strong (use your strengh to keep your opponents device under controll) or heavy (noone will wrestle you off the field).

Make it a thing! Spread the word, get some friends. Basic one-on-one is already great fun. Do it in a park or somewere were people can see you and get interested. Even better, if you are a university student or similar: Get Jugger registered as an official sport to benefit from your university sports advertisement. So you can gather more players. Be one of the first Jugger teams of [insert home country here]!

I don't know were you live but check out this list. Perhaps there is already a team near you?

Make it a thing? Hmmm, I gotta admit though that it's a tempting idea, but I spend a lot of my "free time" drawing n stuff, so I don't think I'd have the time to organize something like that. Maybe HuskyK9 and I could start up a team or something (Naw, JK, we live a bit too far away for that XD)
I live in the US, and there is a team in Berkley, which is at least in the same state, but is a 2+ hour long drive away so I don't know if it's worth it.

Well I tried the running thing today alirezatm, hated it by the way...weeelll I only hated it during the run. afterwards I was feeling pretty good. I ran for 10 minutes in one direction then ran back home.

It wasn't all that bad though, I DID see two chicks who were walking too. Of course, I couldn't actually talk to them because I was too busy keeping my lungs from exploding. All I could managing was a half ass wave hello as I limped/jogged past them. haha

I was wondering if I Should start running without the 20Ib vest first?

I'd advise against running with a vest on until you are really comfortable running and can run a fair distance without stopping.

Even me, who have a 2 years of marathon training courses, haven't been eligible yet to run with weights on. Next time run freely.
