Topic: Fucking scareware

Posted under General

I understand the need to advertise and so I view e621 without any ad-blockers turned on.

But just a short while ago, while navigating e621, I got hit with one of those fucking scareware ads that puts a non-webbrowser popup (the kind that isn't stopped by turning the popup blocker on) on the screen, this one from from "Adware Soft," that pretends to scan the system, claims the system is infected, tries to get me to buy their product and if that isn't bad enough, the scareware itself infected my browser so I wasn't able to go to any site without getting a "your computer is infected" page and I had to restart my system to get rid of it.

I am aware that it is not the fault of the admins of this site. I'm told that how those things work is they're 3rd party advertisers. That is, someone that is allowed to advertise here sells their own adspace to a 3rd party who then uses that to sneak their fucking scareware redirects onto the site.

I no longer view DeviantArt with ad-blockers turned off because the problem with those type ads is so bad there. It needs to be nipped in the bud here or myself and a lot of other people are going to start never viewing e621 with ad-blockers turned off which could result in e621 going under due to lack of advertising revenue.

i dont see why he would be banned when he's expressing a legitimate concern. if anyone should toodle, is the person being nonconstructive and insulting.
anyways, you know what ad it was?

None of this has been happening to me. No scareware ads, no popups, nothing. I run Google Chrome on Vista, no adblockers, running AVG antivirus. Why's this happening to so many others?

I run NoAds. Anytime anything pops up, I open NoAds, find the window in question, and have it autoclose anytime it tries opening. Old program, but it's effective

What browser? like I said, I literally have 0 popups. Banner ads, but no popups.

People just use Opera. In whole my life of using this browser i have never seen those ads, or any kind of shit. It allows ads like this on deviant art and other sites, but those fake ones are blocked.

I'm not sure if DA or e621 even ever had popup-ads... :/ Where do you guys find them?

I'd wager this isn't the fault of our ads but something else. Every single time this has happened before, it's been the fault of an infected computer, or a dodgy browser plugin.

... Yeah, I have a question here. Does Opera have the same terminal lack of features and settings (settings especially) that Chrome does? 'Cause that's why I ditched Chrome after less than a week and went back to Firefox.

I'm kind of a pick-stuff-apart, control-freak kind of person, so for me having a 'streamlined' 'user-friendly' interface and (lack of) settings like Chrome does is basically the kiss of death for functional software.

I use chrome, and I don't find it that bad. I used firefox, but quit after it go so damned bloated.

I'm curious about the whole thing, cause I've seen several people claiming this. I've been browsing e621 pretty heavily with ad-blocker off for a while, and haven't seen anything annoying.

I could use the "lol I'm on a Mac" excuse, but that hasn't stopped these kinds of viruses from showing up before. In the past, one even tried and successfully managed to download a .exe to my computer. I laughed pretty hard....

.exe programs don't run on Mac, Mac uses .app

It then proceeded to give me an error message about how it couldn't run, and I just went and deleted it.

Fail

I was looking for actual comparisons of the two, not personal preferences.

And I won't deny that Firefox is bloated, but it's still not as bad as Chrome's one-process-per-tab 'feature'. The fact that only one tab will crash is irrelevant given FF's tab-restore-after-crash feature anyways. Just cut the connection for a moment while it restarts, and close the tab that caused the crash...

... And on the actual subject at hand, I'm kind of wondering too -- I don't even <i>have</i> an ad-blocker, and E621 has never given me problems. My guess is that new users just go <i>"I got an infection?? E621 is porn, must be them"</i> or something.

I used to use Firefox. Disliked how bloated it became. I then tried Opera, but hated it's clunky lack of features. Started using Camino, and have been very happy with it.

Never tried Chrome.

This guy isn't a new user though, which is what makes me curious...

Honestly, whether I've been using Windows or Mac, I've ran different anti-viruses, and to date I've never had a single virus in like, 6 years. And I've been downloading my ass off, and visiting porn sites, and all that shit.

Which makes me wonder...

HOW THE FUCK DOES ANYONE GET A VIRUS?

Ineptness with teh intarwebs, I think. Then again, I grew up around computers and said intarwebs, so I might just be prejudiced.

Damn, Internet Exploder <i>six?</i>... You need to get a flash drive and install something a little newer on it.
