And whats his or her name?
One of my friends owns a North American Striped Skunk, Mephitis mephitis. I get to take care of him a lot due to her schedule and lifestyle, hes sooooo cute 8D and fluffy... his names Mikki, he's had his scent glans removed so no spraying thankfully. My freind's mate bought her mikki when he was four months old from a breeder. he was so small that he could have fit in a teacup, now he looks like a big stuffed animal XD
There like big fat ferrets, even have the nasty habit of being lil thieves...Mikki likes to steal shiny objects.... >////< and underwear...im serious XD he lined the inside of his skunk condo ball carrier with my panties as well as stashed a number of shinies.

Ferrets and skunks are reasonably closely related, they belong to the same superfamily(closer than sub-order, not as close as family).

So you can't even use him as a stink gun anymore? D:

On serious note though, skunks are very rare in germany outside off a zoological garden or similiar institutions so I have never seen one owned as a pet.
I heard skunks do a handstand if/when they try to spray someone, if so, does he still try that when he is startled?

Heh, that's not true, they just turn around and lift their tail.

Spotted skunks do, but not the stripe ones I think.

Ah, so they do, a unique quirk of the spotted skunk.
Other species of skunk don't.

lol, when you startle him he jumps back and stomps his front feet at you a few times, then feints a lunge, then stomps...if that fails floofs up into a big fluffball

Generally speaking, spraying is a last-ditch response. A skunk'll prefer to fake you out if he can. They also don't spray each other no matter how much they irk each other. When it comes to big, gallumphy naked apes, on the other hand.... :p

we don't have skunks in Sweden.
quite sure they would starve then freeze during the winter.

They hibernate like most mammals in winter-y climates.
Striped skunks live in most of the US, and get about halfway through Canada as well.
Just as cold in those parts of Canada as Sweden.

interesting!

I wish skunks were allowed into Sweden, then. :(
though they would probably demolish any sense of eco system still present in this country...

You also need a special permit to own them here, Skunks carry rabies, or are unnaturally susceptible or something... anyway, they can be very cuddly at times but spend most of the day hiding under beds, dressers, the couch, their carriers, et cetra. They are primary nocturnal, and if you happen to wake them sometimes you can hear them stomping their feet under the bed all annoyed that you woke them up lol They need a special diat and use a litterbox like a cat...unless (like mikki) been trained to walk on a leash. Trust me, get wierd looks and people running in the oppisit direction when i walk him....

I'd rather run into a wild bear than a wild skunk.
