Looks like rome and roman also seem to refer to the same thing, but idk if those should be aliased also?

I would say that on e621, it's either a setting or an aesthetic.
And I'm not sure if there is a particular difference between how these two tags are applied.

uhhh... roman_empire seems like it's more used for iconography related to the actual government/military/whatever, where as ancient_rome seems to be more commonly used for locals inspired by ancient Roman architecture and depictions of the country from art and what not, but there's also lot of overlap in what the two tags get applied to.
