Topic: What is the difference between humiliation and degradation?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

The wiki description for humiliation states, "Images or animations in which a character is forced by another character to participate in some kind of activity deliberately designed to embarrass, degrade, or otherwise humiliate them." The description for degradation states, "(of or relating to) purposefully damaging one's self respect or reputation." These both sound very similar to me (with the former even lumping in degradation with humiliation), and I don't see a meaningful difference glancing through the tags (though it's a squick for me, so I didn't look closely).

Is there a pressing reason to keep these tags separate?

degradation is usually way worse than humiliation.

humilation is embarassing.

degradation is taking that to another level, making someone feel worthless/making them loose all confidence in themsleves/ etc, not just embarassed.

May I request revision of the wiki articles to make this distinction clearer, including clear instructions of when to use one over the other?

It's the difference between "you are a stupid dipshit" and "you are a subhuman degenerate." That said, the line is razor thin and they could probably be merged.

Judging by how people tag them, there often isn't really a difference to be seen either, and there's a lot of overlap between the two tags. I do think there's things that make them unique and warrant being separate, but otherwise it may need some fixing/definition changing as they seem too similar.

to me degradation seems to be used more for the lowering/corruption of a character's self-worth/self-image, where as thing as humiliation is more for social stuff.

I've revised the wiki pages to add this quote as a guideline.
