I wonder if the responsible party will think that screwing up a furry convention was worth a lifetime in the big house.

Knowing how stupid people are today... They sadly might.
"I R HERO 4 NORMAL PEOPLE!!! DEATH 2 FURFAGS!!!".

Anyways, to all you furries thinking of attending conventions... Just please be careful.
If you see any suspicious activity going on, report it to security or whoever's in charge of the convention.
I'd suggest even skipping out if you're paranoid. Even if you're not paranoid, 19 people were hospitalized so... Yeah...
...I'm PRAYING that this is just a one-time thing, and that people aren't organizing other attacks at other conventions...

Commented on this in blips earlier, but I'll say it again, I just can't understand why anyone would think this ok to do to anyone.

But if you let your fear dictate your actions in these circumstances, then you're just showing that terrorism works, and you're letting them win.
It feels pretty strange to be saying something like that about furry conventions, but I guess these are strange times...

Anyone that tries to hurt anybody because of their interests need therapy. Especially if it's something as dangerous as chemical poisoning

I don't think therapy would do much. The perpetrator was probably just a hateful, and, dare I say, evil person fully aware of his actions and the potential consequences. Otherwise he wouldn't have used chemical weapons and would have done something more direct.

To be honest, I'm a little surprised this is the first time.

Christ, I hope everyone's ok. I know it's toxic alone but doesn't it also have horrifying disfiguring side-effects too?
Edit: I was thinking of mustard gas.

Yeah, if they had released that..
Well, let's just say there would be more than 0 deaths.

So far nineteen people are hospitalized. None dead. Not sure how the injured are doing though.
Chlorine gas can kill you in a high enough concentration (a reaction inside the lungs can create hydrochloric acid), but the horrible, agonizing deaths you hear about from chlorine poisoning are usually from military-grade weapons, which, thankfully, isn't what was used here.

Pretty much this. Healthy and balanced people (who don't like furries) don't take these kinds of actions. There's a very good chance that whoever did this has issues and a skewed way of looking at the world, and would benefit from getting help. There's also a good chance they don't want help and think they're "not the problem" which might be why they planned and attacked a group of other people instead of fixing themselves. The fact that they attacked other people means they crossed a line though. And knowing human nature, they're probably "justifying" it in some way to themselves. I hope they catch her/him/them. It's a dangerous type of thinking that both plans and then attacks other people like this. That's never ok.
I'm just glad that from what I hear, the injured should recover in a few weeks. And I'm also glad that no one died.

Sane people are perfectly capable of senseless violence.

If somebody took a baseball bat and started assaulting people at the convention, it would be safe to assume that they were insane. But considering the nature of this attack, whoever did this probably had the mental faculty to understand what they were doing.
The media in general loves to hype mental illness as being the source of criminal activity. But the majority of criminal activity (violent or not) has nothing to do with any mental illness.
Whatever the case, we don't know who did it or why yet... but we definitely will soon.

Today, December 7th, 2014 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the furry community was suddenly and deliberately attacked by chemical weapons of the empire of mundanes.
The furry community was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of trolls, was still in conversation with its hoomans looking toward the maintenance of peace on the Internet.
Indeed, several hours after criminal scum had commenced attacking the Midwest FurFest convention, trolls on the web delivered to our precious snowflakes a formal reply to a recent flamewar. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing circlejerk, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.
It will be recorded that the distance of Chicago from cyberspace makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the white knights have deliberately sought to deceive the n00bs by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
The attack today on the Chicagoan furry convention has caused minimal damage to American otherkin and two-spirit forces. I regret to tell you that 0 to 19 American lives have been lost. In addition, the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Rosemont has been evacuated.
Normalfags have, therefore, undertaken a weapons of mass destruction terrorist prank extending throughout meatspace. The facts of today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.
As a privileged user of e621, I have directed that hilarious measures be taken for our self-preservation. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.
No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the furries in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.
I believe that I interpret the will of the e621 forums and of the fursonas when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.
Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our degenerate interests are in grave danger.
With confidence in our memelord scrubs, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us Allah.
I ask that the e621 community declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by persons unknown on Sunday, December 7th, 2014, a state of war has existed between the furries and the hairless apes.

I just think that people should stop judging people by a single characteristic without even knowing them, its just as bad as racism and if people think that they need to fix other people or the world because of interests of people that don't even concern themselves they probably should seek treatment.
People started calming down lately with racism and preconceived facts about one's sexual inclination (it still happens more than it should) , but they keep on repeating the same basic concept with different stuff wich is using preconceived facts to judge groups of people.

If it indeed was an attack, most definitely yes. But as of yet I don't think there's any proof one way or the other

I don't see how chlorine powder could get onto a hotel staircase by accident.

Well, considering a lot of people think furries are people who fuck animals, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Oh, it certainly seems suspicious, and I suspect foul play, but I'm also not going to jump to conclusions and start crying foul all over the internet until we hear more facts.

You know what I just noticed? Since they were staying at a hotel, there should've been cameras placed all over the place. If they really want to find the dude who did it, they should see if there's any video evidence

You know something else really fucked up? A nearby hotel refused to shelter any of them. Assholes.

Nope, because it (probably) wasn't committed by muslims.

This just in; the unabomber is now officially a Muslim. Otherwise, by your logic, the US wouldn't have considered his actions to be terrorism, you see.

Of course. The federal government has been, well, pretty serious about terrorism these days...

Well, yes, but that's a terrible argument; you can tell because you can substitute virtually any group in there:
People who use that kind of argument are not credible; For any sufficiently (1000+) large group, 'not all Xs Y, but some do' is not worth mention; it's statistically meaningless. People only think of the possibility when a relevant word comes up (animal rights advocates and furries are associated with animals, the other groups I proposed as examples are not.).
A way to further demonstrate the effect would be to swap out 'fuck animals' for 'murder' -> Politicians and FPS players then automatically pop forward mentally, even though we know very little about the actual level of correlation.
The only way to fix the association AFAICS is simply to remove it -- to have furriness not be associated with animals at all, which would be completely nonsensical and counterproductive. *shrug*

Yes, it can be considered a terrorist attack. The whole thing was just stupid altogether. I feel bad for the people that got sick, and I also felt bad about the people that had to evacuate in their underwear and without shoes on.
A friend of mine didn't have his shoes on when the fire alarm went off.

Whoever did the chlorine bs is a major dick for sure. People could have REALLY gotten sick from that shit, or just being out in the cold in general without proper clothing.
