a simp is a male that feels too pathetic to naturally attract a partner, so he idealizes a relationship as the highest goal of achievement in his life. defining characteristics are attempting to "buy" or "earn" the love of another.

For me, that would be hard to express as other than a pejorative, sounding derived of simple(ton) or simpering (or yes, perhaps even Homer-esque).
